RiverHawks swept by Rascals
« Back

May 29, 2008 - O’FALLON, Mo. – River City has turned the tables on the RiverHawks.

After Rockford swept the Rascals at Road Ranger Stadium to open the season, the Rascals returned the favor, capping a three-game sweep with a 2-1 victory at T.R. Hughes Ballpark Thursday. Rockford has dropped four straight; River City has won six consecutive ballgames.

Both Rascals runs came in the second. A single, a walk and a Brett Thomas error loaded the bases with none out, and run-scoring singles by Jacob Deboer and Phil Laurent gave River City a 2-0 lead.

The RiverHawks responded with their only run in the third. Starting pitcher Jason James’ two-out single plated Ryan Kowalski and gave James RBIs in five consecutive games, one short of a career high.

Starter David Arnold and the Rascals bullpen held Rockford’s offense to just two hits after the third inning. Arnold (1-0) pitched 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out a pair. Mike Benacka struck out three in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.

James (1-1) took the loss despite pitching seven strong innings, allowing only four hits and four walks while striking out six, a career high.

The RiverHawks return home Friday for the start of a seven game home stand, beginning with a 7:05 p.m. contest against Southern Illinois. The first set of RiverHawks baseball cards will be distributed to fans entering the ballpark, and fireworks follow the game sponsored by fatwallet.com.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer.
