RiverHawks fall to Rascals in extras

May 27, 2008 - O’FALLON, Mo. – River City has solved the mystery of Mike Marksbury again.

Brad Hough led off the bottom of the 11th against Marksbury by driving a fastball over the left field wall to give the Rascals a 2-1 win. The game-winner came less than week after Marksbury (0-1) gave up three runs in a third of an inning against River City.

River City took the early lead in the second. Jeff Miller led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Luke Barganier’s two-out single.

Both starters took over from there. Rockford’s Chris Schutt allowed only one hit over the next five innings while Rascals right-hander Jonathan Miller gave up just one hit and two walks through the first six frames.

Jason James tied the game by leading off the seventh against Miller with a deep drive over the wall in right, his second homer in as many nights.

Bobby Mosby walked to start the bottom of the ninth, but Roy Bringelson picked off pinch-runner Brian Logan to squelch the threat.

Adam Tollefson (2-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief, including a strikeout of the side in the eleventh.

The RiverHawks offense produced only three hits and failed to put a runner on after the eighth. The Rascals managed only five hits.

Schutt tied a career high with 10 strikeouts while allowing one run on five hits and three walks in seven innings. Miller was equally impressive, striking out eight and walking only two while allowing one run on two hits in seven frames.

The series continues Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. before concluding Thursday with another 7:05 p.m. start. The RiverHawks come back home Friday night to start a seven-game home stand, beginning with a contest against Southern Illinois at 7:05 p.m.
