May 20, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks will open their seventh season in the Stateline on Wednesday with four returning Frontier League all-stars, including the team’s all-time saves leader.

The RiverHawks announced their Opening Night roster on Tuesday. Outfielder/pitcher Jason James and closer Mike Marksbury, both 2007 all-stars, return, as do pitcher Garrett Bauer and infielder Joe Anthonsen, who played in the 2006 all-star game.

James hit .345, second in the league in the batting race, with seven home runs and 61 RBI. Marksbury recorded 14 saves, tops in the league at midseason, when he was signed by Milwaukee at the all-star break. He finished the season with the Brewers’ high Class A affiliate at Brevard County in the Florida State League before his release. He returns to the RiverHawks with 26 career saves, tops in franchise history and tied for the highest total among active Frontier League pitchers.

Manager Bob Koopmann, in his first year as skipper since 2004, when the team won the pennant, also announced his Opening Night starter. Right-hander Chris Schutt, acquired in an off-season trade with Brockton of the Can-Am League, will start against River City righthander Chris Clem. Schutt was 9-5 with a 7.75 earned-run average last year. Clem was 2-9 with a 5.13 ERA.

Opening Night is at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, when the RiverHawks host River City.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer.
