May 17, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The ThunderBolts struck before the rain did on Saturday.

Windy City built a six-run lead and held on to beat the RiverHawks, 6-5, in the opener of an exhibition doubleheader at Road Ranger Stadium. In the nightcap, the RiverHawks led, 9-3, when the game was called because of rain in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The RiverHawks finished the exhibition schedule 0-5-1, with two games lost to rain.

In the opener, Phillip Hawke homered to right-center field with a man aboard and two outs in the top of the first inning. The ‘Bolts added three runs in the fifth inning and a run in the seventh.

The RiverHawks scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the eighth. Steve Pickerell put the ‘Hawks on the board with a RBI double off the fence in left field. The Windy City bullpen later walked three hitters with the bases loaded and gave up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mike Jones before closer Matt Petty got out of the inning. Petty got the last five outs to record the save.

Charles O’Neal, the first of five Windy City pitchers, threw four scoreless innings for the win. Chris Schutt gave up two runs in three innings and took the loss.

In the nightcap, Rockford scored three runs in the first inning and six in the second to take an early 9-0 lead. The rain wiped out a pair of two-run doubles from Ryan McArdle and a Brad Meier home run.
