May 14, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks, Wal-Mart, WREX-Channel 13, Pepsi and Kimberly-Clark are teaming up to support the effort against domestic violence.

The RiverHawks will host the Vintage Base Ball Fundraiser for WAVE at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27 at Road Ranger Stadium. The Midway Marauders, the Stateline’s vintage baseball team, will play an exhibition game against the Wal-Mart Shop Keepers.

Tickets are just $2 and seating is general admission.

Proceeds benefit WAVE – Working Against Violent Environments. For 30 years, WAVE has provided shelter and counseling to victims of domestic violence and to their children. Thousands have been given a kind word, a bit of encouragement, safety from abuse and a chance for independence and self-sufficiency.

Federal funding reductions have cost WAVE $30,000 that had been budgeted for legal advocacy and services for children exposed to violence, the majority of whom are under the age of 5, according to WAVE.

“Vintage base ball” is the name for a brand of baseball that spirits the audience back to the mid-19th Century. The Marauders play under the rules of 1858, where pitchers threw underhand and the curveball hadn’t yet been invented, batters could request the location of a pitch, bases were never stolen and fielders could put a batter out by catching a fly ball on one hop. In addition, vintage teams wear period uniforms and use the nomenclature of that era.

In addition to watching a unique version of the national pastime, fans will be able to enter a drawing for prizes each inning. The prize list already includes a Chicago Rockford International Airport travel certificate ($300 value) and prizes from Wal-Mart including a patio set, a Nintendo Wii gaming system, a 20-inch flat-screen LCD TV, a stainless-steel gas grill, Lia Sophia jewelry ($200 value), and a X-Box game system.

The gates at the stadium open at 1 p.m. Concessions will be available.

Tickets can be purchased at the Road Ranger Stadium box office. For more information, contact Tracy at (815) 988-6937.

Opening Night is at 7:05 p.m. May 21, when the RiverHawks host River City. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255. Most games are broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) and the internet.
