RiverHawks sign former farmhands

April 3, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks announced Thursday that they have signed two players with experience in major-league organizations.

Pitcher Brandon Thomson and outfielder Brian Leclerc have agreed to contracts and will join the team next month for spring training.

Thomson, 22, pitched last year for the New York Yankees’ affiliate in Tampa. The lefty was 2-0 with seven saves and a 1.02 earned-run in 15 appearances with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Yankees.

Leclerc, 23, spent last season with two of the Chicago Cubs’ farm clubs. He hit .246 with no home runs and 13 RBI in 126 at-bats with Peoria of the Class A Midwest League. He was 1-for-2 in one game with Boise of the short-season A Northwest League.

Both players have Rookie-2 status in the Frontier League.

Opening Night is at 7:05 p.m. May 21, when the RiverHawks host River City at Road Ranger Stadium. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer.
