Rockford College to return for 2008

February 25, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Rockford College will once again call Road Ranger Stadium home.

The Regents and the Rockford RiverHawks announced Monday they have agreed to once again play the college’s home games at the professional baseball stadium just minutes from campus. Rockford College’s home opener is a doubleheader against Beloit College at noon March 22. The Regents will play 18 games over 10 dates at the stadium.

“The biggest thing it does is, one, give our players as well as the opposing players a quality field to play on and a quality facility for the parents, as well, to watch a game at,” said Regents head coach Bob Koopmann, who is also manager of the RiverHawks. “Another big positive is how much it helps recruiting Rockford College baseball players.”

Last spring, Koopmann led the Regents to the inaugural Northern Athletics Conference championship in a tournament played at Road Ranger Stadium. Pitcher Fabian Gomez, who was drafted by Oakland, and outfielder Tim Rowe, were both named Division III All-Americans.

“Playing our baseball games at Road Ranger Stadium has been a huge success for the Rockford College community as a whole,” Rockford College athletic director Randy Schrader said. “Our student-athletes get the opportunity to play at one of the best baseball facilities in the Midwest, while our fans can sit back and enjoy the game in an extremely comfortable environment.”

The partnership benefits the college and the community, RiverHawks general manager Josh Olerud said.

“Rockford College has arguably the best facility in Division III, or in college baseball, period” he said. “We’re helping their athletic department raise money through the fundraising programs that we’ve orchestrated. The NAC wants to showcase its conference in our facility. Last year’s tournament, in partnership with the Convention and Visitors Bureau, brought in extra revenue to the area.”

Opening Night is at 7:05 p.m. May 21, when the RiverHawks host River City. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer. Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255. Most games are broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) and the internet. Fans can also visit the RiverHawks online at www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
