January 8, 2008 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The newest Rockford RiverHawk will be making an encore appearance in the Frontier League.

The RiverHawks today announced that they have signed catcher Steve Pickerell, a former member of the Florence Freedom and a former Tampa Bay farmhand.

Pickerell and RiverHawks closer Mike Marksbury, both Cincinnati residents, were teammates in 2004 at Florence, when each was a rookie.

Pickerell spent the following three seasons with the Devil Rays’ affiliates at rookie-level Princeton, short-season Class A Hudson Valley and Class A Columbus. Last season, Pickerell was a composite 4-for-34 (.118) in 13 games between the latter two stops.

Pickerell is a career .211 hitter. He has committed just six errors in 89 career games. Pickerell, who turns 26 on Feb. 5, has Rookie-2 status in the Frontier League.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 16th season this summer.
