August 17, 2007 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Among five ejections and a bench-clearing confrontation in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Rockford RiverHawks still found room for a good old-fashioned comeback.

Matt Sauls doubled with the bases loaded to drive home the tying and go-ahead runs as the RiverHawks rallied to beat Southern Illinois, 6-4, in front of 2,987 at Road Ranger Stadium. The RiverHawks got just their fourth win this season when trailing after six innings.

The RiverHawks didn’t gain any ground on wild-card leader Kalamazoo. The Kings were 12-2 winners at Florence and remained 2½ games ahead of Rockford.

Andrew Marshall hit a home run in the first inning for the Miners. Jono Brooks tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the second. The Miners regained the lead and led by as many as three. Will Henderson trimmed the deficit to one with a two-run homer to left-center field, his ninth home run of the season.

The RiverHawks loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Griffin Bailey (2-3) left after he gave up a single to Brad Dutton and hit Justus Kimbrough. Rick Hummel relieved him and, with one out, walked Joe Anthonsen to load the bases.

Following Sauls’ three-run double to the left-field corner, which put Rockford in front, 6-4, the first of three confrontations in the inning started. Southern Illinois catcher Jason Arrowood, manager Mike Pinto and Bailey were ejected. Two batters later, Hummel hit Henderson and the benches emptied. No punches were thrown, but Henderson was ejected. Following the inning, Hummel was tossed.

Dave Dowling (6-5) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Jason Baca pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. The gates open at 4 p.m. for the sixth annual Doctors-Lawyers Hardball Challenge, featuring former Chicago Cubs Milt Pappas and Bob Dernier. The first 1,000 in the gates get a free team set of RiverHawks baseball cards on Lonnie’s Carpet Max Baseball Card Night. In addition, the Zooperstars make a rescheduled visit to the park.
