‘Hawks lose slugfest, 12-9

July 22, 2007 - TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – On a night which featured nine lead-changes, the Beach Bums scored last to earn a four-game split against Rockford.

Aaron Garza’s eighth inning two-out, two-run home run was the difference in Traverse City’s, 12-9, win over the RiverHawks in Michigan.

Garza drove an 0-2 fastball from Roy Bringelson out of the park to cap the scoring. Bringelson (0-4) got the loss after lasting 2 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits and walked a batter.

Rockford scored early driving in two runs in the first and adding another in the third. The Bums tied it in the fourth inning by scoring three runs. Sam Orr’s two-run homerun off RiverHawks starter Vinnie Rizzi made it a 3-3, tilt. Rizzie, making his Frontier League debut, had a no-decision. He lasted four innings and allowed three runs, two of which were earned.

Rockford added a run in the fifth inning as Joe Anthonsen brought home Roberto Valiente on a force-play. Traverse City took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning, Zach Kalter’s RBI triple and Brad Vericker’s RBI double put the Bums in front, 5-4.

Both teams rallied for three runs in the sixth inning, making it an 8-7 Traverse City lead going into the seventh.

Jono Brooks delivered a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning to give Rockford its final lead at, 9-8.

Jeff Brown's RBI single in the bottom of the same inning tied the game at nine. Bringelson surrendered the run, and stayed on for the game-changing eighth inning.

Bums starter Tony Casoli went give innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits. He got the no-decision. Kalter, who started the game as the right fielder, worked the final two innings for Traverse City. Kalter (1-0) did not allow a run, struck out one, and got the win.

Both teams have Monday off. Rockford returns to Road Ranger Stadium for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday night against Washington.
