RiverHawks blow lead, lose 9-8

May 30, 2007 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Rockford’s inability to protect a pair of leads cost them again on Wednesday night.

The RiverHawks fell for the third straight night, losing 9-8 to Traverse City in front of 2,483 at Road Ranger Stadium.

Traverse City jumped on Rockford starter Brady Salter early, scoring three runs on four hits in the first inning. Curt Ledbetter’s RBI single capped the scoring. Salter received a no-decision after completing 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out six.

Rockford rallied for four runs in the third as Brad Dutton was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Roberto Valiente followed with a single, and Dutton scored on a Joe Anthonsen RBI Single. Valiente would also cross the plate courtesy of a John Day sacrifice-fly. Jason James added an RBI single and scores as Huskins reached on an error.

The RiverHawks would add three more an inning later, and Anthonsen’s RBI single highlighted the inning.

Traverse City battled back with a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Rockford’s crossed the plate for the last time in the fifth as John Day drew a bases-loaded walk.

Justin Holmes hit an RBI single off John Brownell in the eighth to tie the score.

In the ninth, Brad Vericker pulled a Bobby Mack (0-2) pitch into the beer garden in right, connecting on his first homerun of the season and putting the Bums ahead for good, 9-8.

Nick Pepper (1-0), relieved Jack Nelson in the eighth, retired Matt Hagen , and went on to work a perfect ninth inning for the Beach Bums.

Rockford travels to Kalamazoo, Michigan for the first of a four-game, split-site set with the Kings. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m. and will be carried on the Rockford RiverHawks radio network. The RiverHawks return to Loves Park on Saturday night, for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch with the Kings.
