RiverHawks' rally falls short, 9-7

May 29, 2007 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Traverse City’s six-run lead nearly evaporated on a muggy evening at Road Ranger Stadium.

The Rockford RiverHawks rallied for five runs in the late innings, but the Beach Bums escaped with a 9-7 win. Traverse City reliever Brett Bostelman stranded the tying runs to end the game.

The Bums never trailed. They broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning on a RBI groundout by Jeff Brown and a sacrifice fly by Brad Vericker.

Traverse City broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. J.T. Thomas singled in two runs to drive Rockford starter John Gragg from the game. Gragg (0-1) gave up eight runs, five earned, on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The RiverHawks rallied for three runs in the seventh and two in the ninth. After consecutive one-out doubles by Roberto Valiente, Joe Anthonsen and John Day trimmed Traverse City’s lead to two, Bostelman relieved starter Ryan Gehring. Bostelman surrendered a wild pitch and walk to put the tying runs on the corners, but he retired Jason James on a fly to left field for his first save.

Gehring (1-1), making a bid to be the first Frontier League pitcher to throw a complete game this season, gave up 12 hits.

The four-game series ends with a visit from racing star Danica Patrick at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. On the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association jersey night, the RiverHawks will take the field in jerseys modeled after the Roscoe native’s jersey. Following the game, the jerseys will be auctioned, with proceeds to benefit the MDA. Season-ticket holders will be treated to an exclusive meet-and-greet session with Patrick.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 15th season.
