RiverHawks split exhibition doubleheader with Windy City
« Back

May 17, 2007 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks showcased their best pitching of the spring. They also faced it.

In game one of an exhibition doubleheader, Rockford used two pitchers who combined on a two-hitter to knock off Windy City 2-1. The ThunderBolts took the nightcap by the same score, using three pitchers to throw a one-hitter.

An RBI triple from RiverHawks right fielder Matt Sauls ignited a two-run second inning, which provided all the run support Rockford starter Garrett Bauer needed. The left-handed Bauer pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out one. Windy City’s only offense came on a solo home run from center fielder Mike Coles in the fourth inning.

In game two, the ThunderBolts jumped on the board early when leadoff hitter Scott Bolster drew a walk and scored on an RBI single from shortstop Wes Long . They put the game away when Bolster drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh. Rockford’s lone hit came in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter Joe Anthonson singled. But Windy City starter Jordan Smoler induced a double play and a groundout, coasting to his first victory of the spring.

The RiverHawks’ scored on a RBI groundout from John Day in the third inning.
