DiBlasi is player to be named later

November 29, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The last member of the Rockford RiverHawks’ 2004 Frontier League championship team won’t be back for another run at the pennant. Neither will the team’s reigning home-run leader.

The RiverHawks announced Wednesday that utility player Chris DiBlasi is headed to the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the independent Golden League to complete an earlier trade. On Nov. 20, the RiverHawks announced that infielder Dave Keesee and a player to named later had been traded to San Diego for catcher Joey Huskins, first baseman Will Henderson and third baseman Victor Roldan.

In other transactions, the RiverHawks released catcher Gooby Gerlits and first baseman Richard Quihuis-Bell.

DiBlasi has spent all or part of each of the last four seasons with Rockford. Though his infrequent appearances mean he still has rookie status in the Frontier League, he turns 27 – the league’s age limit – in March, and would have been available to the RiverHawks for only one more season.

DiBlasi’s best performance with Rockford was in 2005, when he hit .303 with a home run and 13 RBI in 21 games before an August trade to Richmond. He rejoined the RiverHawks on July 30, 2006 and hit .232 with a homer and seven RBI in 22 games.

Gerlits, who previously played in the Florida and Toronto organizations, spent each of the last two years with the RiverHawks. In 2006, Gerlits hit .228 with a team-high nine homers and 36 RBI in 228 at-bats. Gerlits, who hit 19 home runs in two seasons here, is third on the team’s career home-run list behind Rich Austin and Aaron McEachran.

Quihuis-Bell joined the RiverHawks in July after brief stints with the Golden League’s Yuma and San Diego franchises. He hit .247 with a homer and seven RBI in 97 at-bats.

Each of the released players have 2-year status in the Frontier League.

The RiverHawks are the defending Western Division champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 15th season in 2007.
