RiverHawks will host decisive Game Five after 5-2 loss
« Back

September 9, 2006 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Rockford RiverHawks are returning home, but for a game earlier than they would have liked.

The RiverHawks had two chances to win their best-of-five playoff series with the Evansville Otters in Evansville, but after losing 9-8 on Friday, they fell again, 5-2 on Saturday.

The two teams will play the fifth and deciding game at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday at RiverHawks Stadium.

In the loss, the RiverHawks took the lead in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Bo Flowers and Richard Quihuis-Bell off Nate Arnold (1-0), the Evansville starter.

But Evansville rallied for three in the fifth off starter Shaun Parker (0-1) on a two-run double by Tom Pennino and a suicide squeeze by Dale Mueller with the bases loaded. Parker did not finish the inning.

The Otters got a couple of insurance runs in the eighth inning off John Smith on a two-run double by Mike Galloway.

The RiverHawks had their chances, but left 10 men on base. With two on and one out in the seventh inning, Joe Anthonsen was robbed of a hit by a diving Kyle Smith. The third baseman's play prevented the tying run from crossing the plate. Then with runners at second and third, Rico Santana struck out to the end the inning.

Anthonsen and Santana came up as the potential tying runs in the ninth inning after a pair of walks to Dave Keesee and Matt Sauls. But Evansville closer Mike Bille entered the game and earned his second save of the postseason by getting Anthonsen to pop up and inducing a double-play grounder out of Santana.

The pitching matchup in Sunday's game will be a repeat of Game One of the series, which Derek Roper won with a complete game shutout, beating Chris Pillsbury, 5-0.

The final game of the series will determine who plays the Chillicothe Paints in the Frontier League Championship Series, beginning on Tuesday. The Paints won the East Division Championship Series, 3-1, over the Washington Wild Things. The 6:05 game will feature $1 beer and soda, as well as deals on group tickets and discounts to fans wearing RiverHawks merchandise.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season. Advertising, ticket and suite information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255.
