September 7, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Matt Sauls was within a single of hitting for the cycle on Thursday. Now the Rockford RiverHawks are within a win of advancing to the Frontier League finals.

Sauls was 3-for-4 with a home run, triple and double and drove in two runs as the RiverHawks beat Evansville, 6-2, at RiverHawks Stadium. The best-of-five series moves to Evansville, where the RiverHawks can sweep with a win in Game 3, scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday.

Sauls led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run just inside the foul pole in left field. The RiverHawks, who have not trailed in the first two games of the series, led the rest of the way. Sauls led off the fifth inning with a triple and scored on Joe Anthonsen’s sacrifice fly to make the Rockford lead 3-1. With two outs in the sixth, Sauls doubled home a run and scored on Anthonsen’s two-run single.

Richard Quihuis-Bell was 3-for-3 and drove Evansville starter Cody Blackard from the game with a one-out double that set the table for Rockford’s three-run sixth inning. Blackard was touched for four runs on nine hits.

Rockford starter Tanner Watson went seven innings for the win and combined with two relievers to pitch a five-hitter. The Otters’ runs, in the fourth and fifth, were unearned. Rockford pitching has not allowed an earned run in the first 18 innings of the series.
