September 4, 2006 - SAUGET, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks will not be riding a wave of momentum as they get set to face the Evansville Otters in the Frontier League West Division Series.
Rockford was swept by the Gateway Grizzlies, losing 7-2 in the regular season finale on Monday. It was the fifth loss in a row for the RiverHawks, who won just one of their final ten regular season games.
Starting pitcher Shaun Parker took a 2-0 lead, as well as a one-hitter, into the sixth inning. But Gateway rallied for three runs on three hits and a walk, chasing Parker (4-7) from the game.
The Grizzlies put it away with four runs in the eighth, thanks in large part to two home runs off closer Mike Marksbury, a two-run shot from Mike Breyman and a solo home run for Freddy Lopez.
The RiverHawks took the lead in the third inning. Joe Anthonsen hit a two-out double. While stealing third, the throw went into left field allowing him to score. The 'Hawks got another run when Anthonsen singled home Richard Quihuis-Bell in the fifth.
But the RiverHawks would not get another run off Mike Mlotkowski (5-6) or any other Gateway pitcher.
Ryan Rafferty got out of jams in the eighth and ninth innings to earn his seventh save of the season.
The RiverHawks must now get ready for Evansville, a team that swept them in their last series during this 1-9 stretch. The Otters won the season series as well, 7-5. The first game of the series is Wednesday, September 6, at 7:05 p.m. from RiverHawks Stadium. Tickets are on sale at the RiverHawks box office by phone, in person, or on the internet. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will get a copy of the 2006 RiverHawks team photo.
