August 31, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The dead-ball era is alive and well at RiverHawks Stadium.

Preston Simms and Brian Beuning combined on a four-hitter Thursday as Windy City shut out the Rockford RiverHawks, 1-0. The RiverHawks beat the ThunderBolts by the same score in Wednesday’s series opener.

Rockford starter Derek Roper pitched his third consecutive complete game, but suffered his third straight loss. Roper (6-7) matched a season high with nine strikeouts, in front of 2,893.

For the second consecutive night, the game was scoreless until the eighth inning. Former Rockford College catcher Steve Ketter led off the eighth with a single and scored with two outs when Scott Vetter doubled to right-center.

Simms (5-9), the Frontier League loss leader, scattered two hits over 7 1/3 innings for the win. The RiverHawks threatened in the ninth with runners at first and second and one out, but Nick Johnson was thrown out at the plate when he tried to score on Dave Keesee’s single to left. Beuning escaped the threat and recorded his 22nd save.

The home finale is at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The RiverHawks acknowledge their record-breaking fan support on their annual Fan Appreication Night, sponsored by FatWallet.com, B103 and Clodius and Co. Jewelers. Great giveaways and postgame fireworks await fans.
