RiverHawks can't avoid sweep, fall 6-1

August 29, 2006 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Rockford RiverHawks had a chance to clinch a Frontier West Division crown in their three-game series in Evansville, but instead were swept by the Otters. The RiverHawks went out with a whimper in the final game, losing 6-1 on Tuesday.

Three Rockford errors led to three unearned runs off starter Tanner Watson. It began poorly and went downhill from there. After the RiverHawks stranded runners at the corners in the top of the first, Frank Scott led off the bottom of the frame with a pop into left that Rico Santana let fall in front of him. Santana then threw the ball away for a two-base error, leaving Scott standing at third. Dale Mueller singled him in and the Otters led the rest of the way.

Watson (8-5) allowed three earned runs as well, including one on a home run by Adam Heffron, his second in as many games.

Watson's counterpart, Nathan Arnold, took a shutout into the eighth inning before the RiverHawks finally scraped together enough offense for an unearned run. Santana drove in Matt Sauls, who had reached base safely on an error when trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt, with a single off Arnold (2-0) who struck out four RiverHawks while not walking a batter.

Nathan Stone finished off the 'Hawks by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The RiverHawks are back home for the final homestand of the regular season. They'll take on the Windy City ThunderBolts in a three-game series beginning at 7:05 Wednesday. Kids can get Back to School Kits, sponsored by Members Alliance Credit Union and B-103.
