RiverHawks lose to Otters and weather, 8-3
« Back

August 28, 2006 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – In a game delayed more than two hours at the outset because of rain, the Rockford RiverHawks were swamped by the Evansville Otters, 8-3, in 8 innings on Sunday.

Rockford starter Dane Towery (5-8) couldn't make it out of the third inning, giving up seven runs. He tied Barton Vaughn for the team record for losses in a single season with the defeat.

The RiverHawks had at least one base hit in every inning played, but failed to get the big hits when they needed them. Trailing 3-1 with the bases loaded and just one away in third inning, the RiverHawks managed just one run on a Bo Flowers groundout.

The Otters responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to put the game away.

Matt Restivo (5-5) gave up just one earned run in his six innings of work.

The rain started falling heavily again in the top of the eighth inning with two RiverHawks aboard and only one out. The game could not be completed, and because five innings were already in the books, the game was official.

Rockford can still clinch a Frontier League West Division crown with wins in the final two games of this series. The RiverHawks magic number is three; they lead the Otters by six games with eight left to play. The two teams are back in action Monday at 7:05.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season.
