« Back

August 24, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Rico Santana’s clutch hitting has the Rockford RiverHawks on the verge of another postseason appearance.

Santana doubled home the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the RiverHawks rallied to beat River City, 3-2, Thursday at RiverHawks Stadium.

Frontier League West-leading Rockford is seven games in front of Evansville and 10 ahead of third-place Windy City. The ThunderBolts beat visiting Gateway, 7-6, to prevent the RiverHawks from clinching their third consecutive trip to the playoffs. Rockford can clinch a playoff spot Friday.

River City starter Steve Brook failed to hold a 2-0 lead. Gooby Gerlits singled in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the eighth, Brook (5-6) left after he issued one-out walks to Jason James and Dave Keesee. Closer Pat Evers entered and surrendered Santana’s drive to left-center.

Rockford reliever Adam Kroft pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Kroft (6-2) struck out Mike Cockrell to end a bases-loaded, two-out threat in the ninth.

The RiverHawks announced a crowd of 2,939, including their 100,000th fan of the year, the third year in a row they’ve drawn more than 100,000 fans. The team has drawn a total of 102,754 paid admissions.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Friday. FatWallet.com and WIFR-23 sponsor the Friday Night Fireworks Series.
