August 23, 2006 - WASHINGTON, Penn. – The Rockford RiverHawks wrapped up their season-long, nine-game road trip in strong fashion on Wednesday. They trailed the Washington Wild Things 3-1 going into the ninth inning, but rallied to tie it and force extra innings.

The 'Hawks then rallied for five runs in the top of the 12th to put the game away and get the victory, 8-3.

Rockford hitters had managed only three hits in eight innings of Washington starter Pat Stanley. The only run scored off Stanley was a Gooby Gerlits solo home run.

Up 3-1, the Wild Things turned to their closer, Jim Popp. But the first three RiverHawks reached base to start the ninth, including an RBI single from David Keesee. After a Chris DiBlasi sacrifice fly tied the score, Popp was gone.

Stephen Spragg relieved Popp and pitched into the 12th. The first four batters all reached base against Spragg (6-5) before he was relieved. Two hit batters, a walk, and an error led the 'Hawks to get five runs on just two hits in the frame.

After Garrett Bauer gave up three runs, two earned, he began a streak that would see RiverHawks pitchers set down 17 Wild Things in a row, from the fifth inning until the tenth. Mike Marksbury got out of trouble in the tenth after loading the bases by striking out Lance Koenig.

John Smith (1-1) pitched the final two innings for the RiverHawks, who went 6-3 on the road trip, winning all three series, against Traverse City, Kalamazoo and Washington.

The RiverHawks are back in Loves Park for a three-game series against the River City Rascals beginning at 7:05 on Thursday, August 24th.
