August 21, 2006 - WASHINGTON, Penn. – It was the third battle of the season between two aces -- Derek Roper for the Rockford RiverHawks and Aaron Ledbetter for the Washington Wild Things. It was everything it was billed to be.

Roper (6-5) pitched a complete-game six-hitter to get the 1-0 victory, getting the first shutout by a RiverHawks pitcher this season. He seemed to get stronger as the game went along, retiring the final 11, six of them via strikeout. Roper struck out nine in the game, including striking out the side in the ninth inning to finish it off.

Ledbetter (7-7) suffered his first loss since being dealt to the Wild Things from River City a few weeks ago. He gave up a one-out triple to Jason James and a sacrifice fly to Brad Dutton for the game's only run. He pitched eight strong innings, giving up just five base hits.

The Wild Things left the bases loaded in the sixth inning. The had runners at second and third with one out before Lance Koenig grounded back to Roper. After a walk loaded the bases, Roper induced two popouts to first to escape the trouble. Washington would not get another runner aboard.

The RiverHawks and Rascals split the two games started by these two pitchers in their prior meetings.

James extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Rockford has now won nine of its last 11 games. They are now 11 games in front of the third-place Windy City ThunderBolts, who lost to Kalamazoo.

The RiverHawks play two more in Washington before returning to Loves Park. Each of the games in Pennsylvania will start at 6:05 CDT. The RiverHawks will then be back home to take on the River City Rascals for a three-game series beginning at 7:05 Thursday, August 24.
