Otters beat RiverHawks, 6-2

July 30, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Cody Blackard confounded the Rockford RiverHawks with his unorthodox delivery on Sunday as the Evansville Otters beat the ‘Hawks, 6-2.

Blackard, a lefty who steps toward first base on each pitch, scattered two runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. Blackard (3-3) struck out two and did not walk a batter, though he did hit two.

The second-place Otters trail the RiverHawks by 3½ games in the Frontier League West.

Mike Spry hit a three-run homer for the Otters, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,933 at RiverHawks Stadium.

Rockford starter Dane Towery (4-6) gave up four runs on six hits in five innings. Three of the five leadoff men he faced reached base and two of them scored. Jeff Goldbach led off the fourth inning with a single. Matt Edwards followed with a one-out hit and with two out, Spry hit his third home run of the year to give the Otters a 3-1 lead.

Rockford rookie Brad Dutton hit his second home run in as many nights, a line-drive over the left-field fence in the fifth inning.

The nine-game homestand, the longest of the year, ends at 7:05 p.m. Monday. 97-ZOK sponsors Margarita Monday, when margaritas cost just $3.
