RiverHawks make moves on field, in dugout

July 24, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks announced several transactions today.

The RiverHawks signed infielder Richard Quihuis-Bell and outfielder/pitcher Jason James. The team released infielders Steve Holdren, Scott Lefler and Ryan Gipson. In addition, Rockford announced the resignation of infield coach Mike Croley.

Quihuis-Bell is in his second professional season and has 1-year status in the Frontier League. He has played for three teams in the independent Golden League. He hit .294 with a home run and 22 RBI in 187 at-bats with Surprise last year. This season, he hit .151 with no home runs and five RBI in 16 games with Yuma before his release on June 22. He signed with the San Diego Surf Dawgs and hit .216 with a home run and six RBI in 22 games. His teammates in San Diego included noted author and former American League Most Valuable Player Jose Canseco, as well as former RiverHawk Kevin Ciarrachi.

James hit .418 with six home runs and 62 RBI in 59 games this spring at Lindenwood University, an NAIA school located in St. Charles, Mo. He led the team in hitting and RBI. James was the Heart of America Conference Player of the Year, an all-region selection and an honorable mention for the NAIA all-American team.

Holdren, a first baseman, hit .242 with two home runs and eight RBI in 23 games. Lefler, a corner infielder, hit .208 with two homers and five RBI in 27 games with Rockford. He had been released earlier in the year by Windy City. Gipson, a second baseman who played for Oregon State University’s national-championship team this spring, hit .318 with no homers and three RBI in seven games.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season in 2006.
