July 20, 2006 - TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Due to some scheduling quirks in the Frontier League this year, the Rockford RiverHawks had already played six games against the Traverse City Beach Bums without seeing the first-year team's new home until Thursday. The visit went well.
Matt Sauls went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, helping the RiverHawks to the 4-2 win. Bo Flowers added a pair of base hits and an RBI.
Dane Towery (4-4) pitched seven strong innings for Rockford to get his first win in more than a month, giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one.
A trio of Rockford relievers gave up no hits for the final two innings, with Mike Marksbury pitching a perfect ninth for his ninth save.
The RiverHawks handed Ryan Gehring (5-2) just his second loss of the season, getting nine base hits off the Traverse City lefty in 6 2/3 innings of work.
There are two games left in the series; game two is on Friday at 6:05 CDT. The team returns to Loves Park for a nine-game homestand beginning on Sunday.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season. Advertising, ticket and suite information is available by calling the box office at (815) 885-2255.
