RiverHawks win second game of day in 10 innings, 6-5

July 19, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks didn’t look like they were going to need any late-inning heroics in the nightcap of a pseudo-double header, but it took ten innings to dispatch the Gateway Grizzlies, 6-5.

Matt Sauls hit a bases-loaded, two-out single off Brian Mayfield (0-1) to drive in Bo Flowers and get the walk-off victory.

The game was scheduled to go just seven innings because the first game of the series was suspended in the fourth inning on Monday. The game was completed on Tuesday afternoon, and the Frontier League rules stipulate the second game of the day is to be shortened.

The RiverHawks were cruising to that early ending. They led 4-0 after five and starting pitcher Derek Roper was throwing a perfect game in front of a sellout crowd of 3,307. But Jason Arrowood led off the sixth with a single. The Grizzlies loaded the bases and got a run on a sacrifice fly. After a walk reloaded the bases, Mike Breyman hit a bases-clearing double that tied the game at four. That was the end of the night for Roper.

Mike Marksbury came on in relief and pitched into the seventh inning. Rob Wirth hit a leadoff home run deep to left field, and Gateway had their first lead of the series.

The RiverHawks rallied against the Grizzlies’ closer, however, getting a run in the bottom of the seventh when Nick Johnson drove in Sauls with a single. It remained tied at five until Sauls’ heroics in the tenth.

Adam Kroft (4-2) got the win in relief by pitching two scoreless innings.

Rockford will go for the sweep on Wednesday starting at 7:05 on RiverHawks Batting Helmet Night. The first 1,000 through the gate will get a RiverHawks batting helmet courtesy of Dixon Meyers and the Eagle.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season.
