RiverHawks win in Washington for first time since 2002, 10-6

July 16, 2006 - WASHINGTON, Penn. ­– The Rockford RiverHawks had lost seven in a row to the Washington Wild Things in Pennsylvania dating back to June of 2002.

On Sunday, they snapped the skid.

Matt Sauls had four base hits, and Joe Anthonsen, Rico Santana and Nick Johnson each drove in two runs apiece in the 10-6 RiverHawks victory. Ryan Gipson contributed three base hits of his own as Rockford pounded out 16 hits as a team.

Washington starting pitcher Matt Squires (4-3) was chased in the fifth inning after giving up six runs.

Rockford starter Joe Barbosa (3-2) took a one-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up four hits and two runs. He earned the win.

Auggie Rodriguez, who began the season in the RiverHawks' starting rotation, pitched the final three innings to get his first save of the season. He gave up four unearned runs in the ninth inning.

The RiverHawks now return to Loves Park for a three-game series with the Gateway Grizzlies beginning on Monday. Petco sponsors the annual Dog Days of Summer at RiverHawks Stadium, and fans can bring their furriest friends to the park; it's also another Margarita Monday.

Indy Racing League star Danica Patrick will be on hand for the game on Tuesday, signing copies of her book, "Danica: Crossing the Line." Her racing car will also be available for fans to take pictures with, and her merchandise trailer will be at the park. The RiverHawks will be wearing jerseys designed to duplicate the 2005 IRL Rookie of the Year's racing uniform. Following the game, Patrick will be signing the jerseys, and they will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season.
