Four RiverHawks voted onto all-star team

July 5, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Four Rockford RiverHawks are headed to next week’s Frontier League All-Star Game.

Pitcher Garrett Bauer, outfielders Rico Santana and Nick Johnson and catcher Gooby Gerlits will play for the West Division All-Stars in the game, scheduled for 7:05 p.m. next Wednesday at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. RiverHawks manager J.D. Arndt and his staff will coach the team.

Players were voted to the team by Frontier League managers, coaches, broadcasters and writers. The manager of each division leader as of the end of play today manages each division’s all-star team. Rockford led the West by 2½ games entering play today.

Santana, Johnson and Gerlits are all two-time all-stars. Santana was on the 2004 team; Johnson and Gerlits represented Rockford last year.

Bauer is 3-3 with a 2.03 earned-run average, fifth-best in the league. The former Arizona farmhand is in his first season with the RiverHawks.

Santana is hitting .271 with four home runs and 22 RBI. He has stolen 14 bases in 16 tries.

Johnson is hitting .322, seventh in the league, with no home runs and 22 RBI. He is 8-for-9 stealing and has 13 doubles, second in the league. He was an all-star with Windy City last year before a late July trade to Rockford.

Gerlits is batting .208 with four home runs and 19 RBI.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 14th season in 2006.
