RiverHawks storm back, beat Bums, 10-5

July 1, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks took care of the dramatics early.

After spotting Traverse City three runs in the top of the first inning, the RiverHawks stormed back with six runs in the bottom of the first and went on to beat the Beach Bums, 10-5, on Saturday.

The RiverHawks took two of three from the Bums, including a 5-3 victory on Friday won with a late-inning comeback.

On Saturday, Matt Sauls and Gooby Gerlits hit home runs for Rockford, in front of 2,419 at RiverHawks Stadium.

The Beach Bums scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning off Rockford starter Tanner Watson. In the bottom of the inning, the RiverHawks batted around against Steve Shippey.

Bo Flowers led off the Rockford first with a triple and scored on a Rico Santana sacrifice fly. Five batters in a row reached base with two outs. Sauls extended the inning with a RBI single, Brad Dutton singled home the tying and go-ahead runs and Gerlits hit his fourth home run, a two-run shot to left-center. Shippey (4-2) did not come back out for the second inning.

Sauls and Dutton, two struggling young hitters, had three hits each. Sauls led off the third with an inside-the-park home run.

Watson (4-1) won for the third time in a row. He gave up nine hits, but struck out six in six innings.

The RiverHawks hit the road for three games at Windy City, then return home on Wednesday. The RiverHawks host Gateway for three games, beginning with a 7:05 p.m. game Wednesday. Rock Valley College, Advanced Business Machines and B-103 sponsor Independence Day Fireworks. Pyrotech “Buzzy” Carlson promises the best fireworks show of the year.
