RiverHawks rally, win 5-3

June 30, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Nick Johnson’s driving in runs even without leaving the yard.

Johnson cleared the bases with a three-run double in the seventh inning on Friday. His Rockford RiverHawks rallied for four runs in the inning and held on to beat Traverse City, 5-3.

Johnson, homerless more than a month into the season, was 2-for-4. He has 19 RBI, tied for the team lead.

The RiverHawks ended an 18-inning scoreless streak, in front of 2,448 at RiverHawks Stadium. Rockford had not scored in its last 30 innings at home.

Traverse City starter Ryan Gehring had a 3-0 lead after five innings, but Rico Santana broke the shutout with a RBI double in the sixth. In the seventh, Gooby Gerlits lined a RBI single into left off Hunter Davis and Johnson later doubled off the reliever with two outs and the bases loaded. Davis (2-2) gave up three hits in the inning and took the loss.

Dave Dowling (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Mike Marksbury got out of a first-and-third, one-out jam in the ninth and earned his seventh save. Nick Batkoski hit into a game-ending double play completed when first baseman Beau Massey sprawled into the dirt to catch a wide throw while keeping a foot on the bag.

Mike Reese led off the game with his third home run of the season.

The rubber match of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. The RiverHawks honor 2004 Frontier League Championship Series Most Valuable Player Olmo Rosario on Olmo Rosario Bobblehead Doll Night, sponsored by Dr Pepper/7-Up and 96.7 – the Eagle.
