June 18, 2006 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Rico Santana finished just a triple short of the cycle and scored all three Rockford runs as the RiverHawks avoided a sweep at the hands of the Evansville Otters.
Dane Towery (3-2) pitched a strong 6 2/3 innings for the ‘Hawks, giving up just two runs.
Santana opened the scoring with a solo home run with two outs in the first inning off starter Chris Pillsbury (2-1). He led off the fourth inning with a double, and scored when Bo Flowers hit a double with one out to put Rockford up 2-0.
But Evansville responded in the fifth inning. Mike Spry led off with an infield single. After Towery retired the next two batters, Dale Mueller lined a home run to left to even the score.
Santana led off the next frame with a single. He moved to second on a passed ball by Ricky Clinton, and Nick Johnson drove him home with a single. In his final plate appearance, Santana was intentionally walked.
Adam Kroft retired all four batters he faced in relief, and Mike Marksbury closed out the victory by striking out all three Otters he faced in the ninth, earning his fifth save.
Evansville had won the first two games of the series, 7-3 and 3-1. With the win, Rockford is once again tied for the Frontier League West division lead with the Otters.
After a league-wide off day on Monday, the RiverHawks will resume play at RiverHawks Stadium on Tuesday when they welcome the Florence Freedom into town. Each of those three games will start at 7:05. The RiverHawks will host a Youth Clinic for Kids’ Club members before the game, and will host the second Speed Dating night at the ballpark, sponsored by Al Grace Appliances and B. Sanfield.
