RiverHawks squander opportunities, lose 3-1

June 17, 2006 - EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Despite out-hitting Evansville 7-4, the Rockford RiverHawks could manage only one run to lose their second in a row.

Rockford left 11 men on base, including eight in scoring position, but could not overcome 11 strikeouts by Otters’ starter Landon BrazellK/b> (1-1). A Nick Johnson groundout with the bases loaded in the 7th inning produced Rockford’s lone run.

The RiverHawks left runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings.

Evansville got three unearned runs off starter Garrett Bauer (2-2) in the fifth inning on only one hit. Bauer walked three and saw an error behind him in the inning. A two-run single by Beau Blacken was the big blow.

Rockford still had a chance in the 9th against Evansville’s closer, Mike Bille. A walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a sacrifice bunt put the potential tying runners in scoring position with one out, but Bo Flowers struck out. After an intentional walk to Johnson that loaded the bases, Rico Santana flew out to center to end the game.

Evansville has now won the first two games of this series and four of the first five meetings between the two teams this year. Rockford will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday with Dane Towery (2-2, 2.55 ERA) going against Evansville's Chris Pillsbury (2-0, 1.46 ERA); gametime is set for 6:05.

After a league-wide off day on Monday, the RiverHawks will resume play at RiverHawks Stadium on Tuesday when they welcome the Florence Freedom into town. Each of those three games will start at 7:05.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 14th season in 2006.
