Towery trounces Kings, 6-1

June 13, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Dane Towery pitched seven shutout innings Tuesday as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Kalamazoo Kings, 6-1.

The RiverHawks won their first meeting with the defending Frontier League champions. Last September 10, the Kings dethroned 2004 champ Rockford in the final game played at Marinelli Field, the RiverHawks’ original home.

Towery and Ryan Brnardic combined on a six-hitter, in front of 2,677 at RiverHawks Stadium. Towery (2-2) did not allow a King beyond second base. He scattered five hits, struck out four and walked one.

The RiverHawks knocked Kalamazoo starter Mike Cervera (2-1) out after three innings. Bart Hunton’s sacrifice fly in the second inning broke a scoreless tie. In the third, Jake Bowen doubled home a run and Nick Johnson followed with a two-run double.

Kalamazoo’s Ian Church broke the shutout with a two-out home run to left in the eighth inning.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday. Axberg Heating and 104.9 – the X sponsor RiverHawks Koozie Night.
