« Back

June 10, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Nick Batkoski showed no signs of a sophomore slump on Saturday.

The 2005 Frontier League Rookie of the Year drove in five runs and was a home run short of the cycle as the Traverse City Beach Bums beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 6-3.

Batkoski broke a scoreless tie with a two-run triple in the fifth inning and scored on Mike Reese’s single. Batkoski singled home two more runs in the sixth inning and doubled home a run in the eighth. He won the award last season with the now-defunct Ohio Valley Redcoats.

The RiverHawks rallied for two runs in the ninth inning on Gooby Gerlits’ first home run of the season.

Robbie McClellan struck out six and did not walk a batter. McClellan (1-1) scattered a run on six hits over 5 2/3 innings for the win. Rockford starter Derek Roper (1-2) lasted five innings.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. Sunday on Rockford Register Star Family Night. Kids run the bases after each Sunday game.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league in its 14th season.
