RiverHawks lose wild one to Gateway, 11-10
« Back

June 10, 2006 - SAUGET, Ill. – Despite giving up four home runs, blowing a four-run lead, and watching the bullpen fall apart, the RiverHawks still had the potential tying run in scoring position in each of the final two innings before finally falling to Gateway 11-10.

Rockford led 6-2 after five innings of play, thanks to run-producing hits from Beau Massey, Cody Brooks, and Jake Bowen, as well as some shoddy Grizzlies defense. Starting pitcher Auggie Rodriguez had given up two solo home runs but was cruising otherwise, when it all came apart in the sixth.

Rodriguez gave up a leadoff single then walked the next two batters. With the bases loaded and nobody out, reliever Adam Kroft entered the game. Batters had been 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position against him entering the game, but catcher Jason Arrowood hit a grand slam to tie the game. Arrowood, who was with the RiverHawks during spring training, hit a two-run bomb the next inning off Dave Dowling (1-1) to give the Grizzlies the lead, and Gateway went on to score three more times in the seventh to take a lead of 11-6.

But Rockford rallied, scoring four times in the eighth to cut the deficit to one, thanks to a passed ball, a bases-loaded walk for Brooks, and a two-run single from Joe Anthonsen, all with two outs. Anthonsen stole second base, but Bowen grounded out to end the threat against Gateway closer Todd Pennington. Andy Galle (1-1) got the win in relief.

Rico Santana led off the ninth with a single, but Pennington got the next three batters to get his fourth save of the season.

The RiverHawks will next play back in Rockford, starting a six-game homestand beginning with the Traverse City Beach Bums at 7:05 on Saturday.
