Bauer and Santana lead RiverHawks to victory
« Back

June 7, 2006 - SAUGET, Il. – Starting pitcher Garrett Bauer pitched eight shutout innings and Rico Santana scored both Rockford runs in a 2-0 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies.

Bauer (2-0) gave up only four hits, striking out five and walking three in completely shutting down Gateway. The Grizzlies never got a runner past second base, and had few scoring opportunities. Mike Marksbury pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his third save and second in as many games.

Santana provided all of the offense for the RiverHawks. He hit an infield single to begin the second inning, and promptly stole second base. After Bart Hunton flew out, Santana took off for third and scored when Jason Arrowood’s throw sailed over the third baseman’s head.

Santana led off the seventh inning with a solo home run, his third on the season and second in as many games. He hit the first home run for Rockford in RiverHawks Stadium on Monday.

Gateway starter Nate Roush (1-1) pitched a complete game, giving up just five hits, striking out six and walking one. Only one of the runs charged to him was earned.

The RiverHawks have now won a season-high four in a row and remain in first place in the Frontier League West Division, one game ahead of River City. Game two of the three-game series will be on Thursday at 7:05. The RiverHawks will return to Loves Park on Saturday for a six-game homestand.
