Fifth-inning collapse dooms RiverHawks
« Back

May 29, 2006 - O’FALLON, Mo. – Starting pitcher Derek Roper cruised through the first four innings against River City; the Rascals had managed just two hits during that time. But third baseman John Santor led off the fifth inning with a home run, and it was all downhill from there, as Rockford suffered a 9-1 loss. Seven Rascals wound up crossing the plate in that inning, the final being Eric Chevalier, after the right fielder hit a three-run home run. Roper and the ‘Hawks could not recover, and Roper would be out after those five innings.

Five of the runs in the fifth scored with two outs. Tom Lyons started the sixth inning. He gave up two more runs in 2+ innings of work. Beau Massey relieved Lyons in the eighth and recorded the final three outs for Rockford.

Opposing starter Aaron Ledbetter pitched eight innings, giving up just five hits and one run while striking out eight and walking two. That lone run for the RiverHawks came in the eighth inning. Following an infield single for third baseman Mike Bidwell, Ledbetter threw two wild pitches, and Rico Santana got an RBI groundout. Bidwell finished the game with two of Rockford’s five hits, all of which were singles. The RiverHawks went down 1-2-3 in the ninth against reliever Pat Evers.

The loss prevented a sweep by Rockford, and dropped the RiverHawks back into a tie with River City for first place in the West Division of the Frontier League, with each team sitting on a 4-2 record. Roper’s record fell to 1-1.

There is now a league-wide off day, and it will be followed by the first game at RiverHawks Stadium. Rockford will welcome in Evansville. The Otters were the RiverHawks’ opponents in the 2004 Frontier League Championship Series. Game time is 7:05.
