RiverHawks back in first after 2-1 victory
« Back

May 27, 2006 - O’FALLON, Mo. – Although the score was low, it wasn’t your classic pitcher’s duel for Rockford and River City starters Dane Towery and Mike Renery. Towery surrendered nine hits in 5 2/3 innings while Renery walked five men and hit another ‘Hawk in 5+ innings of work. But the Rascals stranded 12 runners and the RiverHawks left ten on base in Rockford’s 2-1 series-opening win.

River City took the lead in the first inning, scoring their only run on a pair of two-out hits. Designated hitter Eddie Kim doubled to left and was brought in on first baseman Geoff Desmond’s single. Towery wiggled out of jams the rest of the night, never managing a 1-2-3 inning. He departed in the sixth with two outs and two runners aboard, but starting third baseman Beau Massey made the short trip to the mound to strike out shortstop Justin McKinley and end the threat. A trio of RiverHawks’ pitchers worked the scoreless final three innings, capped off by closer Mike Marksbury going 1 1/3 innings. Marksbury got Desmond to strike out swinging with two men on base to end the game.

Rockford tied the game at one in the fourth inning thanks to a pair of leadoff walks and a RBI single by first baseman Mayke Cabrera. They took the lead in the sixth when designated hitter Bart Hunton was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a double by right fielder Nick Johnson.

The RiverHawks managed just five hits in the game after pounding out 14 the day before against Windy City. Cabrera and Cody Brooks, who made an emergency start in left field after Matt Sauls had to sit out with a sore foot, each had two hits. Johnson’s RBI double was the only other ‘Hawk to deliver a hit.

Towery’s win pushed Rockford’s record to 3-1, tying them with River City for the top spot in the Frontier League’s West division. The Rascals were coming off of a sweep against Gateway to open the season. The teams will meet up each of the next two days.
