RiverHawks sign one pitcher, release another

May 26, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Friday, the RiverHawks announced that they had signed pitcher Grant Payton and released pitcher Mike Greenhouse.

Payton, a left-hander, is a true rookie from Grand Valley State University. He was 12-1 with a team-leading 2.08 ERA and his strikeout-to-walk ratio was better than 2-to-1. He made 11 straight appearances without allowing more than one earned run, a streak that spanned 68.1 innings. He was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the year. Payton played for RiverHawks bench coach and former manager Bob Koopmann at Illinois Valley Community College.

Greenhouse, acquired from Calgary of the Northern League in the Aaron McEachran trade, did not appear in a game with Rockford.

Opening Day at RiverHawks Stadium is 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, May 31. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 14th season in 2006.
