May 18, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – There is tying in baseball, at least in spring training.
The Rockford RiverHawks finished their exhibition schedule on Thursday when they avoided a loss, though they also avoided a win in the same game. Rockford rallied for two runs in the fifth inning and tied the Windy City ThunderBolts, 4-4 in the nightcap of a doubleheader at RiverHawks Stadium. The ‘Bolts won the opener, 6-2.
In the first game, Windy City broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run sixth and broke away with a three-run seventh. Former RiverHawk Doug Schutt scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by losing pitcher Tim Rice.
Vince Berry had two infield singles in a losing effort.
Jason McMillan (1-1) won in relief.
In the nightcap, the ‘Bolts batted around and scored four runs, two on a Bo Flowers double, in the fourth inning. The RiverHawks rallied for an unearned in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Kevin Ciarrachi and Beau Massey scored on a two-out throwing error by Windy City third baseman Chad Hill.
Massey, a relief pitcher, was the third baseman in the opener and the DH in the nightcap. He was a composite 2-for-4 with two walks, a steal and a run.
