RiverHawks trade for infielder, sign another

May 18, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks added two infielders to the roster, one through a trade and one through a free-agent signing, the team announced today.

The team acquired middle infielder Joe Anthonsen from the Gary Railcats of the independent Northern League in exchange for a player to be named later. The RiverHawks also signed first baseman Bart Hunton. Both players are true rookies.

Anthonsen, 23, was a contact hitter at Campbell University. He hit .317 in 2005, his senior year. In 2004, he hit .356 and struck out 13 times in 202 at-bats.

Hunton, 24, attended four different colleges and never hit below .390 at a four-year institution. This spring, Hunton hit .418 for Urbana University with eight home runs and 64 RBI. He set school records with 24 doubles and 35 walks. He was named American Mideast Conference Player of the Year.

The regular season starts at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday, May 24 at Windy City. Opening Day at RiverHawks Stadium is 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, May 31. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 14th season in 2006.
