RiverHawks begin spring training, add exhibition games

May 10, 2006 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks begin spring training today with a new manager in their new ballpark.

J.D. Arndt and his coaching staff have begun the task of narrowing down their roster to the 24-man limit before the regular season begins in two weeks. Among the returning players are pitcher Derek Roper, who will double as the pitching coach, Frontier League all-star outfielder Nick Johnson and catcher Kevin Ciarrachi, the last remaining original RiverHawk.

The RiverHawks will play a total of five exhibition games over three dates. The RiverHawks have now scheduled a trip to Crestwood to play the Windy City ThunderBolts in an exhibition doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League come to RiverHawks Stadium for an interleague exhibition at 3 p.m. Sunday. The ThunderBolts visit RiverHawks Stadium for another doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 18.

Fans who buy season tickets are invited to join the RiverHawks for the annual preseason picnic, catered by Toni’s of Winnebago. It will take place between games of the doubleheader, at approximately 6 p.m., on May 18 at the RiverHawks Stadium picnic area.

The season opens at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday, May 24 at Windy City. Opening Day at RiverHawks Stadium is 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, May 31. The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 10-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 14th season in 2006.
