January 11, 2012 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – Former Rockford RiverHawks catcher Elvin Millan, Jr. has been involved in the local baseball community since his first stint with the team in 2010. He made numerous appearances as a player, and continues to give hitting lessons at Wallbangers Academy in Loves Park. Millan is taking his community involvement to the next level this spring, as he will be the head coach for Guilford High School’s freshman baseball team.

“Wallbangers Academy opened a whole new network of people to me,” Millan said. “I learned about the opening at Guilford through my work at Wallbangers, and decided it would be a good fit.”

Millan will coach from mid-February until April 27. At the end of April he will go to New Mexico to play for the Las Cruces Vaqueros of the Pecos League.

“I have always wanted to get involved in coaching, and there are a lot of kids in Rockford who have the drive to play and continue to improve their skills,” Millan said. “I want to teach the kids about respect and discipline, and show them there is something other than baseball out there.”

Millan has some previous experience coaching and mentoring college and high school players. He has worked with a few college players from Heartland Community College in Normal, and high school kids throughout the Rockford area. Millan’s job at Guilford is the first time he’s ever coached a high school team, though.

Millan, 24, is from Queens, N.Y. but he lives in Rockford now. While his primary goal is to get back into professional baseball, Millan is also dedicated to serving the Stateline baseball community.

“I would like to stay here in Rockford, because the fans have always supported me,” he said. “The RiverHawks gave me my opportunity, and I will always be willing to help them and the community at large.”

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league that will play its 20th season in 2012. Advertising and season ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
