RiverHawks announce 2012 schedule

October 13, 2011 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks’ 11th season is a bit over seven months away.

Rockford’s professional baseball team announced its 2012 schedule on Thursday. The RiverHawks will open the season on the road on May 18 with a game at River City. Following the season-opening, six-game, seven-day trip, the RiverHawks come back to Road Ranger Stadium. Their home opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. May 25, when they host the Lake Erie Crushers.

The Frontier League, the oldest current independent league in professional baseball, will play its 20th season in 2012. The league plays a 96-game regular-season schedule. The circuit will expand from 12 to 14 teams for 2012 with the addition of teams in Schaumburg and London, Ontario.

“The Frontier League has a track record of durability and it may be as strong as it’s ever been,” RiverHawks general manager Brad Sholes said. “Having the schedule this early is one example. It is almost unheard of for an independent league to have a schedule finalized this quickly. We now have plenty of time to turn our efforts toward putting together the best promotional calendar in RiverHawks history.”

The RiverHawks will play a pair of three-game series against 10 of their 13 opponents. They will play 12 games each against Schaumburg, Normal and Gateway. The RiverHawks will move to the West Division from the East.

Beginning May 25, the RiverHawks are at Road Ranger Stadium for nine games during their first homestand. In addition to the Crushers, they will play Normal and London.

Thirty of the RiverHawks’48 home games are scheduled for high-demand Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday dates.

“We’re hitting it hard in June and July, which have historically been our most popular dates,” Sholes said.

The RiverHawks have just nine home games in August. Following their Aug. 26 home finale, the RiverHawks visit London and Gateway to finish the season.

Standard times for home games are 7:05 p.m. weeknights and 6:05 p.m. Saturdays. Sunday starting times will be announced at a later date.

“We experimented with 2:05, 4:05 and 6:05 p.m. start times in 2011, depending on the point of the season, and found each to be beneficial to our fans,” Sholes said. “As we develop the best possible promotional calendar, we will determine the best start times.”
