September 27, 2011 - LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford RiverHawks and Rockford College will host the Lakeside Baseball Fall Showcase on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2 at Road Ranger Stadium.
There will be four games each day, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The showcase will feature more than 80 high school players from Illinois, Indiana and southern Wisconsin.
“Most of the players are high school seniors, but there are also some juniors and sophomores,” Rockford College head baseball coach Bob Koopmann said.
The teams participating are the Lakeside Cardinals, the Racine Hitters, the Lombard Lightning, the Norwood Blues, the McHenry Hurricanes, the Athletic Barn and the Illinois Sparks.
“These teams go to different college campuses during the fall in hope of exposure,” Koopman said. “They have been to Augustana, Kenosha, Wisc., Valparaiso, Ind., and are now coming to Rockford.”
College and professional scouts have been invited, and will be in attendance.
“We like having showcases at Road Ranger Stadium because all the kids love to play there,” Koopman said. “It is a huge recruiting advantage for Rockford College.”
The RiverHawks host youth tournaments and showcases throughout the spring, summer and fall.
“It’s been the RiverHawks goal to use Road Ranger Stadium to spread the word about youth baseball in the Rockford area,” director of operations Chris Daleo said. “The Lakeside Fall Showcase is just another example of that. Regardless of the event, these weekends help the local economy and bring added exposure for youth baseball in the Stateline region.”
